In this video, I walk you through what to do when you have a mystery skein that has lost its ball band. Yes you can eyeball the weight….you can tell the difference between worsted and fingering. But I show you 2 tools that will help you to determine the size and almost more importantly how many yards you have in that little ball.

Thank you very much for the tip re this yarn gauge–having the grooves seems wonderful and I have ordered one–the name of the Etsy shop is Cottontailfarmva.
And, I just have to express my frustration with the yarn balance–it is such a great idea, but I can’t find consistency–it seems to me that the length of yarn that it takes to balance should be repeatable, but I have found that, for me, different lengths of the same yarn will achieve balance–maybe I am looking for too high a level of precision.
Interesting observation about the balance. I know that with farm yarns and handspun there would be a great deal of variation. I wonder why there is so much variation other than the wool can be slightly heavier or lighter in a particular section. Now I know to include a caveat.
