I have a new podcast out in the world. I had a great conversation with Dalis of Dancing Leaf Farm. We talked about her journey as a textile artist. We talked about yarn and color and being a solopreneur. I also wanted to specifically talk to her about how she keeps her balance as a business owner, artist and human being.
In this part 4 of the Be a Color Explorer series, I teach you about complementary colors and more. We look at how to work with those multicolored skeins and bring them into harmony with other skeins in your collection. If you’ve been following along, you will have started to develop confidence in your own color sense, your own color choices and have learned to put together skeins for great shawls, sweaters and other textiles.
In this episode, we explore color harmonies. From monochromatic to complementary… Lisa talks about how you can use these in your textiles and also the pitfalls to avoid. Build your color confidence!
I dropped the new episode of the Flying Goat Farm Podcast. This week, I talk about how the 12 hue(color) families grow to the thousands of colors. Just think about the color chips in the paint store or the beautiful bolts of fabrics in a quilting store or the wall of yarn at your LYS or needlepoint store. All these colors excite us and give us so much pleasure to work with. I also talk about how these colors provide the interest in your handcrafted items.
I talk about this color evaluator tool to “see” the values in your work, your yarn, or your fabrics.
If you are joining me on this journey, I give you a couple of tasks to do with your collection to build your color confidence and curate your collection further.
You can listen to the podcast here OR on your preferred podcast platform such as itunes or spotify. If you would rather watch on You Tube, click here to see it.
Today the last installment of Collection Curator is available. Today I talk about what to do with all the yarn, roving, patterns, needles, and notions that are not part of your collection any longer. Those items that need to be rehomed. There are 2 paths you can take: you can donate out right or you can host a yarn swap party. When we are able to meet, I think the yarn swap would be so great.
Several years ago, my creative friends and I bought a bale of antique kimonos from Japan. We did a kind of swap party then too. We laid them all out. Then we very deliberately took turns picking out our favorites. It was fun to see our personalities emerge from the picking. One of us, Judy picked the wild patterned and gloriously colored children’s kimonos to use in quilt projects. I picked out the ones that showed the most dyeing and ikat patterning. This deliberate picking is just one of the 2 ways to do your swap.

In this episode, Lisa walks you through your needles, hooks and notions. We’re almost at the end of really having the collection that you love. So join in and address all those needles, stitch markers and gauges.
Go from total disorganization and duplicates to knowing where all your needles and notions are and what you actually have. Stop buying extras because you can’t find that elusive set of needles. Click here to listen or subscribe on itunes here so you don’t miss an episode.
In this episode, Lisa talks about becoming more confident putting skeins together for a beautiful garment. Lisa also talks about what you can do right now to build your confidence in combining colors of yarn or roving in your collection. If you are joining Lisa on this adventure to finding love within your collection, she outlines some specific steps you can take this week to move from stash shame into full and unadulterated love of your collection.
In this episode, I talk about visiting, really visiting your collection. This is the first step to go from shame to love! I know that some of you have a pretty big collection that may not just be a few bins but a roomful? There’s a strategy for that as well.
Last year, just before the pandemic hit, I went through my quilt stash and changed it to a collection of fabric that I truly love. I did 1 bin a day. It took a week as I recall. I went through each bin and really visited each piece of fabric. I did KonMari** on it. If it brought me joy, I kept it. If it was just “meh”. I put it aside to donate. I am so glad that I spent that time. I’m so glad that I did a little a day. I just spent an hour or so. But did it day after day. That way I avoided overwhelm. So I’m suggesting that you do that too.
I know that after you listen to this episode and doing the simple steps that I suggest, you will feel the excitement and yes, the LOVE of your collection!
I’m so excited about Season 2 of my podcast. This season I’ll be leading us through a change of vocabulary which will change our mindset.
I’ve been on a crusade to banish the word STASH from our vocabularies. It has such a negative connotation. And there is a sense of shame that follows that word around. In this podcast, I’ll give you a new word about your wonderful yarn, or cloth or beads and all of those raw materials that you collect. It is your collection.
So I hope you enjoy this first installment of season 2. I hope you will join me in this adventure to change you vocabulary. To go from stash shame to collection love.
