I have never been able to master the long tail cast on. I can’t figure out how long to make the tail. And I either end up with not enough or too much left over. So this provisional cast on is great. It is like making a crochet chain over your needle. Here is a video that shows you how.

Long tail cast on can be done with two ends from the yarn cake, no more needing to know how long to make the yarn needed. Just cut one end and continue with the rest of the cake. However, yours is a good suggestion. And I still just do the backwards loop thing because it’s so simple, not that I’m knitting much these days.
